Theology Course offered by the Ecumenical Fellowship of Aelred of Rievaulx

If you are interested in ecumenical issues and would welcome the opportunity to explore the heart of the Christian faith, then this could be just the thing for you.

Theology for pleasure

A one-year course for personal enjoyment and stimulation with speakers of the highest quality. The course was first offered in 1990, the Ecumenical Fellowship was formed by early course members who wished to continue learning and growing together.
The course is for anyone interested in exploring the range of Christian Traditions, Christian Unity and the Wholeness of Creation. It is also a useful introduction to further Christian studies.

Objectives

The course will provide the opportunity to

• be enriched by the whole Christian Tradition and develop an understanding of the challenges for Christian reconciliation and unity

• listen to, and grow alongside, Christians in an ecumenical setting

• experience other traditions and movements by a series of field trips, including Monasticism, Orthodox and Moravian worship

• join the Ecumenical Fellowship of Aelred of Rievaulx with its programme of further mutual enrichment and fellowship.

Course Content

The course focuses on three broad areas of exploration over 3 terms

Pathways towards Christian reconciliation and unity
an exploration of the Biblical and historical basis of unity in the Church and creation

Pathways to a relationship with God
an experience of the customs, practices and worship of the major churches; with ecumenical insight into music, art and architecture, icons and stained glass and green theology.

Perceptions within the Christian tradition
insight and emphasis into important theological issues which affect Christian Unity.

Your Commitment

The course requires a willingness and interest to participate weekly for two hour sessions, to undertake some reading and personal reflection and to experience other traditions. There is a small ecumenical library which is available for further study. Each participant should aim to attend at least 26 sessions and produce a short reflection on Ecumenism before the end of the course.
